When someone searches for “CNC machining in Peenya”, “dentist in Vidyaranyapura” or “travel agency near me”, Google shows a map with three businesses before any website link. Those three businesses get most of the calls.
The good news: getting into that map pack is not magic. It is the result of a well-set-up Google Business Profile, a helpful website and steady reviews. Here is the checklist we use for our clients across Bengaluru.
Step 1: Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
- Search your business name on Google Maps. If it exists, claim it; if not, create it at business.google.com.
- Use your real business name exactly as on your signboard and GST documents. Do not stuff keywords into the name.
- Complete verification (video, phone or postcard, depending on what Google offers).
- If you visit customers rather than receive them, set it up as a service-area business and hide your address. List the areas you serve instead.
Step 2: Choose the right categories
Your primary category is one of the strongest ranking signals. Pick the most specific one that describes your core business (“Website designer”, “Machine shop”, “Travel agency”), then add a few relevant secondary categories.
Step 3: Fill in every section
- Business hours, including special hours on holidays
- Phone number with WhatsApp, website link and appointment link
- Services or products with short descriptions and prices where possible
- A clear business description that mentions what you do and where
- At least 10–15 real photos: premises, team, work, products
Step 4: Build a steady flow of reviews
Reviews influence both ranking and whether people call you. Ask every happy customer. Make it easy by sharing your review link on WhatsApp right after a job is done.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and quickly.
- Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them. Google removes them and can suspend profiles.
- Aim for a steady trickle every month rather than a burst once a year.
Step 5: Make your website support your map listing
- Show your business name, phone number and service areas consistently on every page.
- Create pages for your main services and the areas you serve (for example, “Website design in Rajajinagar”).
- Add LocalBusiness schema markup so Google clearly understands who you are.
- Make sure the site loads fast on mobile, since most local searches happen on phones.
Step 6: Get listed on trusted directories
Consistent listings on sites such as Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, industry associations and chamber of commerce directories reinforce your credibility. Keep the name, phone and area identical everywhere.
Step 7: Post updates regularly
Google Business Profile lets you post offers, updates and photos. A short post every week shows Google and customers that you are active.
Common mistakes that hold businesses back
- Different phone numbers or names on different listings
- Duplicate profiles for the same business
- Choosing a broad category like “Company” instead of a specific one
- No photos, or only stock photos
- Ignoring negative reviews
How long does local SEO take?
A well-optimised profile often starts showing results within a few weeks for less competitive searches. Competitive categories in busy areas can take a few months of consistent work.
